Mbappe, Dembele inspire France past Morocco to WC semis
France continued its bid to become the second European nation to reach three consecutive World Cup finals, as it dominated Morocco 2-0 in the first quarterfinals of 2026 World Cup here on Thursday, reported Xinhua. The two sides were locked in a goalless first half before second-half strikes from Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele powered France to victory. France moved into the last 8 after a tough 1-0 victory over Paraguay thanks to Mbappe's penalty, while Morocco knocked out co-host Canada with a convincing 3-0 win. The two sides had already met in the 2022 World Cup semifinal with France winning 2-0. It was almost a lop-sided first-half as France had 13 attempts while Morocco only managed one. Les Bleus threatened from the very beginning, as Mbappe's long range strike was denied by Yassine Bounou, seconds before Dayot Upamecano's header was parried away by the Al Hilal goalkeeper. France won a penalty in the 25th minute, when Mbappe broke into the box and was brought down by Noussair Mazraoui, but Bounou played heroics to save Mbappe's fairly weak attempt. Desire Doue robbed the ball in the 35th minute and surged forward but only saw his strike tipped away by Bounou, while Lucas Digne's rocket in the stoppage time rattled the crossbar. The 2018 World Cup champion kept up the pressure and finally broke the deadlock just after the hour mark. Doue slipped a pass to Mbappe, whose curling right-footed effort flew beyond the reach of a helpless Bounou. It is Mbappe's eighth goal of the tournament which made him the first player to score at least 8 goals in each of two editions of World Cup. Ousmane Dembele doubled France's lead minutes later after a well-worked team move. The 2025 Ballon d'Or winner collected the ball just outside the penalty area, took a few touches and unleashed a powerful curling strike that beat Bounou. The African side never truly tested France until the 83rd minute when Azzedine Ounahi's attempt from distance forced a one-handed save out of Mike Maignan, while Neil El Aynaoui's header on the resulting corner hit the side-netting. The only downside for Didier Deschamps' side is Mbappe's injury which forced him to make way for Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Govt submits Passenger Package proposal to parliament
The government on Thursday submitted a Union communication to Parliament concerning the European Commissions proposals for a Passenger Package, said the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Transport and Communications in a joint press release. The Commission presented the Passenger Package on 13 May 2026. The package includes proposals on rail ticketing, passenger rights and multimodal bookings. Its aim is to make it easier to plan and book long-distance and cross-border rail journeys, particularly where journeys involve several transport operators. The proposals would also strengthen passenger rights. The government views the objectives of the Passenger Package positively. The proposals could make travel easier, improve passenger rights and promote a more level playing field among service providers. At the same time, the government considers it important that the regulation remains proportionate and does not impose an unreasonable administrative burden on businesses or public authorities. As regards the proposals on rail ticketing and passenger rights, the government believes that the impacts of the obligations relating to single tickets, particularly on regional and local rail services, should be assessed further during negotiations on the package. It is important to ensure that the necessary national exemptions can continue to apply to local rail services, said the government. The government considers it appropriate that railway undertakings with significant market power should be subject to more extensive obligations than other operators to provide access to their ticketing channels. The government supports the objectives of the proposed regulation on multimodal booking services. It is appropriate that small and medium-sized service providers, which make up most Finnish providers, would remain outside the scope of the proposed obligations. However, the scope and definitions of the proposal should be clarified during the negotiations. It is also important to ensure that the obligations imposed by the regulation are necessary, proportionate and fair in relation to the benefits sought. Under the proposal, railway undertakings would have to make their tickets available for sale in a way that allows them to be combined with products from different railway operators into a single ticket. In addition, railway undertakings with significant market power would have to open their ticketing channels to other operators. The proposed regulation on passenger rights aims to ensure a high and consistent level of passenger protection. Under the proposal, passengers would more often benefit from passenger rights protection, even where a journey includes services operated by several railway undertakings. The regulation would define the rights associated with a single ticket, including the right to reimbursement, rerouting, compensation and assistance in the event of disruptions. The Union communication will next be debated in Parliament. The European Commission has presented the Passenger Package to the Council working party, and negotiations will begin in July. At EU level, the Member States and the European Parliament will formulate their positions on the Commissions proposals.

World Cup round of 16 reshapes title race
The World Cup title race is down to eight teams after a round of 16 that produced upsets, comebacks and final acts for several of the game's biggest names. Norway delivered the standout shock by beating Brazil 2-1, with Erling Haaland scoring twice in the closing stages. Orjan Nyland saved Bruno Guimaraes' early penalty before Haaland struck twice in the final 11 minutes to send Norway into the quarterfinals for the first time. Endrick also squandered a gilt-edged chance, dragging a tame effort wide with only Nyland to beat. The result gave Brazil its earliest World Cup exit since losing to Argentina in 1990. Neymar, who scored a late penalty, later announced his retirement from international football after a 16-year Brazil career that saw him become the country's all-time leading scorer. Cristiano Ronaldo's sixth and final World Cup also ended in the last 16 as substitute Mikel Merino scored late to hand Spain a 1-0 win over Portugal. Spain broke the deadlock in the 91st minute when Fabian Ruiz picked out Ferran Torres, who threaded a pass for Merino to finish clinically past Diogo Costa. Ronaldo had few chances to add to his three goals in the tournament. The 41-year-old, who is Portugal's most capped player and its leading scorer, stopped short of confirming the end of his international career. Argentina survived the round's most dramatic comeback, recovering from being 2-0 down in the 79th minute to beat Egypt 3-2. Cristian Romero began the comeback with a header before Lionel Messi made amends for an earlier penalty miss with his eighth goal of the tournament and a record-extending 21st at the World Cup. Enzo Fernandez completed the turnaround with a stoppage-time header, earning Argentina a meeting with Switzerland. Morocco underlined its growing status by beating Canada 3-0 after Azzedine Ounahi scored twice in Houston. The reigning African champion became the only team from the continent to reach the last eight, where it will face France. In Philadelphia, Kylian Mbappe converted a second-half penalty - his seventh goal of the tournament - as France overcame stubborn Paraguay 1-0. England also survived a scare, beating Mexico 3-2 after playing most of the second half with 10 men following Jarell Quansah's red card. Jude Bellingham scored twice before Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez struck either side of a Harry Kane penalty as England held on, ending Mexico's hopes of a first World Cup quarterfinal appearance since 1986. In Seattle, Charles De Ketelaere scored two goals and set up another as Belgium advanced with a 4-1 win over the United States. Hans Vanaken also struck before Romelu Lukaku put the result beyond doubt in stoppage time as Belgium set up a duel with Spain. Switzerland completed the last-eight lineup by beating Colombia 4-3 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes in Vancouver. Davinson Sanchez and Cucho Hernandez missed for Colombia in the shootout before Ruben Vargas converted the decisive spot kick, sending Switzerland into its first World Cup quarterfinal since 1954.

Issued at the conclusion of the 2026 NATO Summit here, the declaration reaffirmed the Alliance's commitment to collective defence under Article 5 of the Washington Treaty. "We, the Heads of State and Government of the North Atlantic Alliance, have gathered in Ankara to reaffirm our ironclad commitment to our collective defence under Article 5 of the Washington Treaty and to the transatlantic bond. An attack on one is an attack on all," the declaration read. The leaders reiterated that NATO would continue pursuing its 360-degree approach to deterrence and defence in response to the long-term threat posed by Russia and the persistent threat of terrorism. To strengthen the Alliance's defence capabilities, NATO announced more than USD 50 billion in new defence procurements and committed to expanding manufacturing capacity, accelerating innovation with industry, and removing defence trade barriers among Allies. The declaration also noted that European Allies and Canada increased their investments in core defence requirements by more than USD 139 billion in 2025 as part of efforts to meet NATO's defence commitments. "In 2025, European Allies and Canada increased their investments in core defence requirements by more than $139 billion. Our investments are delivering the capabilities we need while strengthening our industrial base and resilience," the statement read. "Today in Ankara, we announce more than $50 billion in new procurements and commit to expanding collective manufacturing capacity and working with industry to accelerate innovation," it added. Highlighting future military capabilities, NATO said it would continue investing in integrated air and missile defence, deep precision strike capabilities, uncrewed systems, intelligence, cyber and space assets while also developing an interoperable transatlantic warfighting cloud and adopting advanced artificial intelligence models. Reaffirming its support for Kyiv, the Alliance said Ukraine remains integral to transatlantic security and pledged EUR70 billion in military equipment, assistance and training for 2026. NATO members also committed to sustaining at least equivalent levels of military support in 2027. The declaration welcomed the European Union's decision to provide multi-year funding for Ukraine through the Ukraine Support Loan, describing continued assistance as equitable, predictable and sustainable over the long term. The Alliance also addressed broader security challenges, stating that it would continue adapting to strategic competition, hybrid threats and regional instability. NATO leaders further reiterated that Iran "must never have a nuclear weapon" and called on Tehran to fully respect freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. The declaration concluded with NATO leaders expressing appreciation to Turkiye for hosting the summit and looking forward to the Alliance's next meeting. The 2026 NATO Summit was held in Ankara, Turkiye, from July 7 to 8, with leaders focusing on increasing defence investment, strengthening the defence industry, and sustaining long-term support for Ukraine.

US, Iran to halt strikes ́for now, ́ to meet in Doha over Hormuz
The United States and Iran have agreed to pause mutual attacks "for now" and hold talks on Tuesday in Doha, the capital of Qatar, to work out their dispute over the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. media outlet Axios reported Sunday, said Xinhua. The two sides will stand down "for now" and "vessels can move freely" as technical talks are set to continue, a U.S. official was quoted as saying. The Tuesday talks were originally set to be held in Switzerland and focused on Iran's nuclear program. However, renewed tensions in the Strait of Hormuz prompted the talks to be moved to Doha, shifting the focus to shipping security in the strategic waterway. During negotiations in Switzerland a week ago, the U.S. delegation agreed with Iran to establish a "hotline" between the U.S. military and Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps to coordinate traffic in the strait. However, as of Saturday, the "hotline" still wasn't operational, according to the report. Iran claims strikes on US targets in Kuwait, Bahrain in retaliation Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) said its forces fired ballistic missiles and drones at U.S. military facilities in Kuwait and Bahrain early Sunday in retaliation for recent U.S. strikes against five Iranian coastal posts. In a statement on its official news outlet Sepah News, the IRGC said its navy and aerospace force launched a joint retaliatory attack against the U.S. Army's eight important infrastructure facilities at the Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait and the U.S. Fifth Fleet in Bahrain. It added that the United States had attacked five Iranian coastal posts early Sunday under the pretext of responding to the IRGC Navy's "confrontation with a violating ship." The IRGC said from now on, vessels seeking unauthorized passage through the Strait of Hormuz would be dealt with more powerfully than in the past, and any potential aggression under any pretext would be met with a crushing response. It warned that violating the ceasefire is in breach of a recently signed peace memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Iran and the United States on ending the war, and would lead to the complete cessation of all diplomatic processes. It added that under the peace MoU, Iran is responsible for managing maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. Kuwait on Sunday strongly condemned what it described as repeated Iranian attacks targeting its territory, saying the latest attack violated its sovereignty and threatened regional efforts to ease tensions. In a statement posted on social media platform X, Kuwait's Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the attack as a "flagrant violation" of the country's sovereignty, saying it posed a direct threat to Kuwait's security and stability as well as to the safety of its citizens and residents. Meanwhile, Bahrain's Interior Ministry said a residential building in Muharraq Governorate was damaged as a result of an Iranian attack. The ministry said on X that no casualties were reported in the attack, adding that authorities had begun taking necessary measures at the site. Several explosions were also reported in Iran's southern Hormozgan province and on Qeshm Island early Sunday, according to Iranian media. The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a Sunday post on X that its forces had conducted "additional strikes against multiple targets in Iran," adding that the strikes were in response to an earlier drone attack by Iranian forces against a Panama-flagged tanker transiting near the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM stressed that its forces' strikes were in "direct response to continued Iranian aggression against commercial shipping," noting that "U.S. military aircraft targeted Iranian military surveillance infrastructure, communication systems, air defense sites, drone storage facilities and minelayer capabilities." Similar clashes occurred early Saturday when CENTCOM claimed airstrikes against Iran's southern coasts, and the IRGC said its naval forces had, in retaliation, struck the U.S. military positions in West Asia. On June 18, Iran and the United States signed an MoU on ending the war across the region, including in Lebanon. The two countries are currently in negotiations to reach a final agreement.

1,300 excess deaths linked to Europe heatwave: WHO
More than 1,300 excess deaths have been recorded across Europe since June 21 linked to high temperatures, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on social media platform X on Sunday, reported Xinhua. "Right now 150 million people are living under extreme heat, hundreds have died, schools are shut, grids are buckling," Tedros said on X. He warned that "heat stress is often called the 'silent killer' - and European homes, workplaces and schools were not built for these temperatures". Europe is the fastest-warming continent on Earth, heating at twice the global average, Tedros noted. "Driven by climate change and global warming, the phenomenon of the 'once-in-a-generation' heatwave is now occurring" nearly annually, he said. The WHO is working with its members and partners to address the health threats posed by extreme heat through focusing on preparedness, prevention and stronger health system responses. Tedros called on European countries to "implement heat health action plans" as part of the broader agenda to protect health against climate change. Separately, the WHO has published practical tips for keeping cool during extreme heat on its website. The guidance recommends staying out of the heat by avoiding outdoor activity during the hottest time of day, staying in the shade, and spending two to three hours daily in a cool place. To keep homes cool, the WHO advises using night air to cool down homes after dark, closing windows and covering them with blinds during the day when outdoor temperatures are higher than indoors, and turning off as many electrical devices as possible. The guidance also warns that electric fans should only be used when temperatures are below 40 degrees Celsius -- in temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, fans will heat the body. If using air conditioning, the WHO recommends setting the thermostat to 27 degrees Celsius and turning on an electric fan, which will make the room feel 4 degrees Celsius cooler and can save up to 70 percent on electricity bills for cooling. To keep the body cool and hydrated, the WHO suggests wearing light and loose-fitting clothing, taking cool showers, wetting skin with a damp cloth or spray, and drinking water regularly -- at least one cup per hour and two to three liters per day. The guidance also emphasizes checking in regularly with vulnerable people, especially those over 65 and those with heart, lung or kidney conditions, disabilities, or living alone. The WHO also warns people never to leave children or animals in parked vehicles, to avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, and never to cover an infant stroller with dry fabric -- which makes it hotter inside -- but instead use a wet, thin cloth and re-wet as necessary.

Helsinki University rises student places through open university route
The University of Helsinki is increasing the number of student places offered through the open university route in its bachelors programmes, said the University in a press release on Wednesday. In the coming years, 10% of places in these programmes will be allocated to applicants who have previously completed open university studies. In many disciplines, this is already the case. “Experience has shown that students admitted through the open university route are motivated and committed to their studies. They already have a realistic understanding of university studies, and many have completed parts of their degrees before becoming degree students,” said Jenni Krapu, Head of Services of the University of Helsinki. The open university route currently serves as a channel to almost 30 bachelors programmes at the University of Helsinki on the basis of completed open university studies. One of the latest additions is the Bachelors Programme in Pharmacy. The most popular options available through the open university route include the Bachelors Programme in Law; the Bachelors Programme in Politics, Media and Communication; the Bachelors Programme in Society and Change; and the Bachelors Programme in Social Research. Open university education is organised both online and on campus. Openly available courses can also be completed during the summer teaching period. Admissions criteria vary by degree programme. The required scope of completed studies is usually 25 to 60 credits, and consideration is usually also given to academic performance. The spring 2027 criteria for the open university route will be published in Studyinfo by the end of October 2026, the press release added.
