If you’ve been scrolling social media recently, chances are you’ve seen those heartwarming images of a baby Japanese macaque clutching an orangutan plushie. While much of the imagery doing the rounds is AI-generated brand content, the story behind it all is very real. Meet Punch, the little monkey whose unlikely friendship with a stuffed toy captured hearts around the world. From Abandonment to Internet Fame It all started at the Ichikawa City Zoo near Tokyo, Japan. Punch, a seven-month-old Japanese macaque, was abandoned by his mother, reportedly after a difficult labour during a heatwave. Zoo staff stepped in to nurse him, and when he was reintroduced to the monkey enclosure earlier this year, things didn’t go smoothly. Adults swatted him away when he tried to approach them, and for the most part, Punch played alone. Enter the IKEA Orangutan The plushie was originally given to Punch to help build his muscle strength. Baby macaques usually hold onto their mothers to build a better grip, the keeper told Reuters. In Punch’s case, something had to substitute for his mother. It worked!
