MBC board fires George Kasakula
Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) Director General (DG) George Kasakula has been dismissed from the public broadcaster after months on suspension.Kasakula confirmed the development to The Daily Times, saying he does not agree with the MBC Board’s decision, which cited partisanship as grounds for his removal.“I still had a contract until June next year; so, it must be arbitrated whether what the board has done—especially not compensating me—is wrong or right,” Kasakula said.He further argued that the broadcaster’s operations are guided by law, insisting that the decision to dismiss him was unjustified.The MBC Board of Directors earlier announced Kasakula’s dismissal, stating that he was found to have acted in a partisan manner.The decision followed his appearance before the board’s Human Resource and Administration Committee last week.Kasakula was first appointed DG of the State broadcaster in 2021.In June 2024, he signed a new contract that was set to run until June 2027.However, in October last year, he was suspended from duty pending investigations, a process that has now culminated in his dismissal.The development has long been open to debates around governance, editorial independence, and contractual protections within Malawi’s public institutions.
