Al Sadd brace for tougher Kobe test in Elite quarters

Doha, Qatar: Al Sadd head coach Roberto Mancini has warned his side face an even greater challenge against Japan’s Vissel Kobe in their AFC Champions League Elite quarter-final at Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Sports City Stadium in Jeddah as they look to build on their dramatic Round of 16 triumph.

“We have a tough match ahead of us, and it will be more difficult than facing Al Hilal,” Mancini said, underlining the scale of the task awaiting the Qatari champions.

His side are coming off an exhausting encounter that stretched to 120 minutes before sealing a 4-2 penalty shoot-out victory, leaving recovery a key concern ahead of today’s clash.

“We need to recover after the great effort the players made, but we are capable of performing better and achieving victory,” Mancini added.

The Italian also explained his decision not to rotate during the previous match, citing the team’s balance and cohesion as crucial in navigating the high-pressure contest.

Defender Romain Saiss echoed his coach’s warning, describing the quarter-final as a difficult assignment for both sides.

“We played a strong match against Al Hilal and we are capable of continuing and achieving victory,” he said. “The Asian Championship is very important for the club and the fans, and we will give our best to reach the semi-finals.”

Standing in their way is a Vissel Kobe side arriving in Saudi Arabia in excellent form and close to full strength.

Head coach Michael Skibbe confirmed the return of several experienced players, providing a timely boost for the Japanese outfit.

“I’m very happy that nearly all the players are ready, especially experienced players who have played in Europe,” Skibbe said.

“They are leaders of our group and this is very important for us. Hopefully we will show that we are competitive against Al Sadd.”

The German, in his first season after replacing Takayuki Yoshida, is relishing the opportunity to test his team on the continental stage after missing out on the finals last year. He also acknowledged the strength of West Asian opposition, pointing to the pace, power and physicality that sides like Al Sadd bring.

Vissel Kobe, leaders in the J.League’s western conference, will be facing the Qatari side for the first time in the competition, setting up a compelling East versus West showdown with a semi-final place at stake.

Al Rayyan beat Muaither to clinch QSL Cup

Doha, Qatar: Roger Guedes and Aleksandar Mitrovic scored in each half as Al Rayyan produced a commanding display to defeat Muaither 2-0 in the QSL Cup final at Al Bayt Stadium yesterday.

The victory delivered Al Rayyan’s first trophy of the season and the first silverware for new coach Vicente Moreno since taking charge following the departure of Artur Jorge.

It also marked the club’s first title since their Sheikh Jassim Cup triumph in 2018, boosting confidence as they now turn attention to the Amir Cup and the Gulf Club Champions League (GCCL) after falling short in this season’s Qatar Stars League (QSL) title race.

“It’s a great moment for everyone and everybody is happy,”
Al Rayyan’s Rodrigo Moreno said after the match.

“It was a good game and we also have to congratulate Muaither for putting up a strong tournament run throughout the competition. We played well and deserved the trophy. We will now aim to qualify for the final of Gulf Club Champions League.”

Al Rayyan were in dominant form throughout the final, continuing the level they showed across the tournament, while Nabil El Zhar’s Second Division side Muaither saw their impressive run end in disappointment.

Al Rayyan imposed their rhythm early, pressing high and dictating the tempo from the outset. Khaled Ali registered the first shot on target, but Muaither goalkeeper Majed Abdullatif Khan dealt with it comfortably, while David Garcia later sent a header over the bar.

Khaled then went close midway through the first half, his diagonal effort narrowly missing the target, before Al Rayyan finally broke the deadlock just before half-time.

Gabriel Pereira drove down the right flank and delivered a precise pass to Khaled Ali, who intelligently laid it off for Roger Guedes. The Brazilian forward created space inside the box before calmly placing his finish into the right corner in the first minute of added time (45+1).

Al Rayyan doubled their advantage in the 53rd minute when Mitrovic powered in a close-range header from a Pereira free-kick.

The goal stood after a VAR review confirmed no offside infringement. Muaither were unable to mount sustained pressure as Al Rayyan controlled proceedings to see out the win and celebrate the trophy.

Moreno’s side will now meet Qadsia SC in Qadsia SC semi-final on Friday.

Currently third in the QSL, Al Rayyan will also meet Al Arabi on April 28 as they aim to finish the league campaign strongly.

Microsoft adds hidden feature flags to Windows Insider builds
Microsoft Windows Insider members will soon have an easy way to select which new features they test. Until now, Windows Insiders have had to wait for Microsoft to randomly assign them news features for testing through its Controlled Feature Rollout program or enable the features themselves through third-party software such as ViVeTool . The new Windows setting, Feature Flags, will be a boon for administrators of Microsoft products who want to get a handle on the innovations relevant to their enterprise. Microsoft has not officially announced the new functionality, but an eagle-eyed user spotted the Feature Flags setting buried in the latest Windows Insider software build. Microsoft Windows design and research leader Marcus Ash responded congratulating the spotter on their speed, adding that he would be “Excited to share more about WIP settings next week.” He followed that up with a post to a Microsoft blog that changes were on the way, saying that users will “ have more control” over features they care about. The Windows Insiders who wish to delve into the new settings are out of luck for now: They are not enabled yet. But messages contained in the latest build of the software say “these features are still in development and may change” and that “turning them on or off could affect performance or stability.” So, while there are plenty of hints about the forthcoming release, users will still have to wait for an official announcement from Microsoft and there is no indication as to when that will be.

Meta moves fast toward a world where AI builds the software
Meta Platforms is reportedly pulling top software engineers from across the company into a newly created AI unit on a mandatory basis, with the stated goal of eventually having autonomous agents perform the bulk of the work of building, testing, and shipping its products, and human engineers serving only to monitor them. The development was based on an internal company memo authored by Maher Saba, a vice president in Meta’s Reality Labs division and a longtime associate of Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth, who leads the new Applied AI (AAI) Engineering organization, reported Reuters . According to the report, Saba created AAI last month and initially sought volunteers to join. This week, he told selected employees their transfers are no longer a choice. “AAI is one of the company’s highest priorities and we’re resourcing it by moving our strongest talent to address it. Therefore, the transfers aren’t optional,” Saba wrote in the memo, the report added. The unit’s mandate goes significantly beyond building AI productivity tools. According to the memo AAI’s stated end goal is for autonomous AI agents to perform the bulk of the work required to build, test, and ship Meta’s products and infrastructure with human engineers monitoring rather than executing. Gartner predicts that AI agents will require 80% of the engineering workforce to upskill by 2027, and separately forecasts that 40% of enterprise applications will embed task-specific AI agents by year-end 2026, up from less than 5% in 2025. “Meta’s move signals that AI is now being fundamentally positioned within engineering as a core execution infrastructure, rather than just as a productivity layer,” said Ishi Thakur, senior analyst at Everest Group. “Competitive advantage will hinge less on access to models and more on how deeply organizations can embed AI into real-world engineering workflows.” But analysts caution that the path there is far from straightforward. “For Meta-scale firms, agent-led engineering is achievable only in tightly scoped domains today,” said Charlie Dai, VP and principal analyst at Forrester. “Before reducing hands-on developer responsibility, enterprises must establish robust evaluation harnesses, policy-as-code controls, deterministic build pipelines, and explicit human escalation paths.” What AAI is building AAI will work alongside Meta’s Superintelligence Lab, headed by former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang, to build what Saba described as “the data engine that helps our models get better, faster,” according to the report. The organization consists of two teams: one focused on interfaces and tooling, and a second responsible for executing tasks, generating data, and providing evaluations that feed back to Meta’s modeling teams. “This reflects a growing belief that traditional management layers will become less relevant as AI absorbs coordination and execution tasks,” said Thakur. “Value is concentrated in high-skill individual contributors augmented by AI.” Dai cautioned that the structure carries significant governance risk. “If provenance tracking, gated approvals, and automated security testing are not mandatory, AI-generated code can overwhelm oversight and erode accountability for quality, compliance, and audits,” he said. On Meta’s Q4 2025 earnings call in January, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said 2026 would be “the year that AI starts to dramatically change the way that we work.” Susan Li, Meta’s chief financial officer, said on the same call that output per engineer had already risen 30% since the start of 2025, driven largely by AI coding agents, with power users recording an 80% year-over-year productivity increase. For Meta, AAI is the next step in embedding that trajectory deeper into its engineering infrastructure. Workforce reductions ongoing Separately, Meta has been reducing its overall headcount in 2026. The company has already cut approximately 10% of its Reality Labs division in January, affecting around 1,000 employees, and laid off several hundred more in late March across recruiting, sales, global operations, and Facebook social teams. Meta’s capital expenditure for 2026 is projected between $115 billion and $135 billion , nearly double its 2025 spend, driven by investments in data centers, chips, and AI infrastructure. The company formalized that infrastructure drive with the launch of Meta Compute , consolidating its global data center and network operations under a single leadership structure. “The dominant barrier is organizational,” said Dai. “Enterprises have not yet redefined ownership, incentives, and liability when software is produced by agents. Until accountability frameworks catch up, leadership caution will continue to slow adoption.” Thakur put it plainly: “The real constraint is no longer technological capability, but whether organizations can evolve their operating models fast enough to responsibly absorb this level of autonomy.” Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

使用授权请联系 news@chnet.co.nz 。 chineseherald.co.nz All Rights Reserved

Mbappe 100 percent, Bellingham fit, says Real Madrid's Arbeloa

Madrid: Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa said Saturday he has "maximum confidence" in French superstar Kylian Mbappe ahead of the derby clash against Atletico Madrid.

Mbappe returned from a knee sprain as a substitute against Manchester City on Tuesday after missing five games and Arbeloa said he was excited to have the forward back at 100 percent, along with fit-again England international Jude Bellingham.

The duo will be in Madrid's squad for Sunday's La Liga game against Diego Simeone's Atletico at the Santiago Bernabeu.

"I already told you that the day (Mbappe) came back would be when he was at 100 percent," Arbeloa told reporters.

"I think that in the minutes we saw him in Manchester, with the two or three bursts of pace he made, every one of those actions showed he's in great shape and, above all, (it's about) his own feelings...

"We have maximum confidence, maximum security, maximum excitement to have a player like him back, so decisive and at 100 percent."

Mbappe is Madrid's top goalscorer this season with 38 goals in 34 games across all competitions.

Arbeloa said he was happy that the French national team have called up Mbappe for matches against Brazil and Colombia next week in the United States.

"I think it's fantastic. He's a player who's available to the coach, who has already played with us, who's definitely going to play tomorrow, so I don't see any problem with him going with his national team," added Arbeloa.

England coach Thomas Tuchel called up Bellingham for international duty even though the midfielder has not played since February 1 because of a hamstring injury.

"He's now available, he'll be in the squad tomorrow. We'll see if he plays. I think he will, he's available and I'm really looking forward to seeing him out on the pitch," said Arbeloa.

"From there it's normal that he can go with his national team.

"It's clear that Jude Bellingham is a very intelligent player, he knows especially well what he's doing at every moment and the situation he's in, but from my side I'm very happy that he'll be available tomorrow and ready to help us."

Madrid will be without goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who is set to miss several weeks with a thigh injury, but Arbeloa said he had faith in his replacement Andriy Lunin.

"The best goalkeeper in history gets injured, and we have another outstanding goalkeeper who will once again show how good he is," said Arbeloa, adding he has "utmost confidence" in the Ukrainian.

Japan beat Australia 1-0 to win Women's Asian Cup

Sydney, Australia: Maika Hamano scored the only goal as a formidable Japan downed Australia to clinch a third Women's Asian Cup title on Saturday in a front of a record-breaking 74,357 fans in Sydney.

The Tottenham star hit a stunning long-range strike in the 17th minute at Stadium Australia to break Australian hearts and add to their continental crowns from 2014 and 2018.

Those finals were also against Australia, and also ended 1-0.

The edge-of-the-seat decider culminated a landmark tournament with more than 350,000 fans through the turnstiles, reinforcing the growth in popularity of the women's game.

This was around six times as many as the previous tournament record set in 2010 in China, with the final setting a new attendance record for a single game in tournament history.

The Asian Cup doubled as qualifying for the World Cup in Brazil next year, with Australia, Japan, South Korea, China, North Korea and the Philippines all punching their tickets.

The Japanese team stacked with English-based players were invincible in their run to the final, fluid across the park and defending well to steamroll everyone in front of them.

While Australia proved a much tougher test, nothing could stop them as they accumulated 29 goals and conceded just one through their six tournament games to reinforce their status as Asia's number one team.

Japan named an unchanged line-up from their 4-1 semi-final thumping of South Korea.

Australia made one change to the team that beat defending champions China 2-1 in the last four with Wini Heatley preferred in central defence to Clare Hunt.

The hosts were composed at the start, looking to dictate the game, and Caitlin Foord should have scored on 11 minutes when Mary Fowler threaded a pass through inside the box.

But the unmarked Arsenal striker sent her shot straight into the arms of Japan keeper Ayaka Yamashita to miss a golden opportunity.

It proved costly with Japan breaking the deadlock six minutes later when Tottenham midfielder Hamano collected the ball outside the penalty area and unleashed a 25-yard rocket that found the top corner.

Foord had another chance when she pounced on a sloppy clearance from Yamashita, but failed to find the target from a tight angle, then scuffed another wide just before the break.

Japan were always a threat and and West Ham's Riko Ueki went close twice in as many minutes soon after the restart.

With the game on a knife-edge, Australia threw everything they had at Japan in a desperate attempt to find an equaliser as the crowd noise reached fever pitch.

Alanna Kennedy almost pulled off a late equaliser in the 88th minute, but despite intense pressure Japan were rock solid and absorbed the threat to cling on for the win.

Storage vendor offers a real guarantee — but check out those fine-print exceptions
For as long as most junior coders have been alive, tech vendors have talked up performance guarantees even though they neglect to detail just what happens if they don’t deliver as promised. I have been begging vendors to knock off these deceptions for a long time — a very long time . Last week, I briefly celebrated when storage vendor Scality announced a guarantee and backed it up with a promised payment of $100,000 if it failed. So far, so good. In its announcement, the company boasted that the guarantee did not come with a lengthy list of limitations. “Unlike complex vendor programs that advertise larger amounts but are difficult to claim,” the vendor said, “Scality’s guarantee is designed to be clear, accessible.” It argued that the guarantee was “simple” and came with “straightforward eligibility” requirements and company execs made a lot of noise about what they were doing. In an interview, Scality CMO Paul Speciale elaborated, dismissing other companies that deliver a “long list of stipulations and terms” and an “onerous list of conditions.” In a statement, Scality CEO Jérôme Lecat said, “With this cyber guarantee, we’re putting our money where our architecture is. It’s a simple, direct promise that reflects the confidence we have.” Given that we journalists are a cynical and suspicious lot, those words sounded too good to be true, so I took a look at the company’s end-user license agreement (EULA). More on that in a moment, but let’s just say my suspicions turned out to be warranted. Read the EULA The lesson here for IT? Always read every word in the EULA and other documents before signing any deals. Let’s start with the guarantee, which relates to customers using its Artesca storage line: “A $100,000 financial guarantee to customers if an external cyberattack destroys or encrypts data stored immutably on Artesca. The program applies to every Artesca customer without requiring the purchase of additional services. As long as organizations keep Artesca up to date and protect data using Object Lock in compliance mode, they qualify for the guarantee.” Forget the limitations, even the initial offer has limts. The cyberattack must be external — somehow exempting insider attacks from this guarantee — and the attack must destroy or encrypt data. If an attacker simply exfiltrates data or even just accesses it without authorization, the customer gets no money. ( This Willy Wonka clip strikes the right note.) By the way, the absence of exfiltration was no oversight. As Speciale said, “Even with stolen or leaked credentials, we can prevent data stored immutably from being deleted or encrypted. But anyone with proper access credentials can read and therefore exfiltrate data. A deletion/encryption can be audited whereas a data exfiltration cannot be audited.” He also said his company has mechanisms in place to make it less likely for an attack on the vendor to expose customer data. “First, our support team does not have the customers’ Artesca access credentials,” Speciale said. “Next, even if we would, our product implements MFA, so it would not be enough that the credentials are stolen. The device enabling the real-time second factor authentication needs to also be under control of the attacker, a much rarer occurrence. This would require more active participation of the person attacked by the social engineering, but again we don’t even have the access credentials for the customers’ system to begin with.” What other limits are in the fine print? “Customers must notify Scality within 48 hours of discovering a qualifying incident and cooperate in root cause analysis, including providing relevant logs and telemetry.” Oh, really? A customer that’s just been hit with a cyberattack is going to be insanely busy those first two days. Customers could easily blow by that deadline — if they’re even aware of it — before even thinking of applying for the money. Speciale said the 48-hour time frame is only for an initial heads up. Why theshort window? “If a customer waits weeks or months to report the incident, critical system logs may be overwritten, and evidence of how the breach occurred will be lost, making it impossible to verify if the software failed or if the customer made a configuration error.” So Scality wants to see those logs to decide for itself whether the incident qualifies. The dilution of the guarantee deepens elsewhere. The news release said the guarantee “applies to every Artesca customer without requiring the purchase of additional services.” Not exactly, given that it excludes free license customers. The documents also limit that ethereal $100,000 to customers “with a minimum of 50TB license.” That’s not an especially onerous requirement, but it does undermine the “applies to every Artesca customer” claim. There is also a strange exemption that kicks in if an attacker does anything beyond deleting or encrypting data; the EULA says that encryption or deletion must be “the direct and sole consequence” of the attack. How much is enough? Scality also includes this interesting line in its news release: “Many Artesca customers protect 50TB or more, while investing only a few thousand dollars per year in software. For those customers, a $100,000 payout represents a multiple of their annual investment, thereby delivering very strong proportional assurance.” But when a breach occurs that is the vendor’s fault, the issue is how much did that mistake cost the customers. If a customer loses $15 million, the company CFO is not going to say, “That’s OK because we only spent $10,000 on the product.” That company is going to want full compensation. It makes me wonder: Is this guarantee a cute way of sidestepping a civil court verdict that could easily cost far more? The EULA says: “Licensee acknowledges and agrees that the Guarantee Payment shall constitute the sole and exclusive remedy for any Qualifying Cyber Incident, and no other damages, including, but not limited to, direct, indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, shall be available to the Licensee.” Asked about this, Speciale said that other paperwork signed by the customers already blocked alternative legal mechanisms, whether by civil lawsuit or arbitration. “The guarantee is actually an enhancement, since without the Cyber Guarantee, standard commercial terms from most storage vendors, including Scality, disclaim liability for loss of data or a security breach. Our standard liability is also capped at the amount paid by the customer.” In other words, if customers don’t read the initial documentation carefully and sign it, they’ve already have surrendered their right to be made whole. Maybe loudly touting a guarantee that comes with with an extensive list of exemptions is slightly better than offering no guarantee at all. But the underlying lesson remains: caveat emptor has never been more apt.

3 Android theft protection additions you should absolutely activate
BRRRRRRRRRREAKING NEWS, y’all: Despite what the internet’s many misleading headlines may lead you to believe, Android security (gasp!) isn’t actually all that scary. You know that by now, right? Any reasonably recent Android device has layers upon layers of built-in protection. You’ve got mountains of Android security settings standing by and waiting to protect you — along with some optional extreme protection power-ups, if you really want to keep your gates guarded.More than anything, though, no naughty Android app can just magically plop itself onto your phone and then access private info. Apps only appear if you explicitly install ’em — and even then, they’re only able to access sensitive data and areas of your device if you approve the permissions to permit that. That’s some critical 101-level knowledge to keep in mind at the start of any Android security discussion — especially one from a source that’s either incentivized to generate a persistent sense of fear (hiya, security software vendors!) or written by someone who doesn’t understand Android enough to separate sensationalism from reality.I bring all of that up now to tell you that this isn’t another one of those “sky is falling!”/”new Android malware monster is out to getcha!” narratives. Nope — no one is digging for your data, hacking into your hackles, or pouncing on your pantry to purloin all of your peanut butter, even. (Well, that last part might actually be happening, but that’s just the work of your friendly neighborhood marmot, with no digital security connection.)Rather, as often does occur, Google’s given us a handful of powerful new tools to further strengthen our Android security setups and bring even more layers of protection into our lives. They’re slowly but surely starting to show up as options on devices worldwide — and, in many cases, it’s up to you to find ’em and activate ’em.Here’s what’s available and how you can get it going.[Get level-headed knowledge in your inbox with my free Android Intelligence newsletter — three new things to try every Friday and my Android Notification Power-Pack as a special welcome bonus.]Android theft protection addition #1: Failed Authentication LockFirst things first: The foundation for our first Android security addition first appeared as a part of Android 15 — so your phone will need to be running that Android version or higher in order for it to be present.More recently, though, the feature gained a dedicated user-control toggle within the Android system settings — and that’s just beginning to appear on Android gizmos near and far.The easiest way to get to the appropriate section is to search your settings for the phrase theft protection. Tap the associated option that appears, then see if an option for “Failed Authentication Lock” appears anywhere on the screen that comes up next.Failed Authentication Lock is a recently added option that’s well worth activating.JR Raphael, FoundryThis one may or may not be available for you yet, depending on your device’s manufacturer and how often they issue under-the-hood updates, but it’s well worth checking. If you don’t see it now, make yourself a mental note to keep revisiting this every month or two, until it arrives. And if you do see it, make sure the toggle next to it is in the on and active position. There’s no reason not to activate this and every reason to do so.Android theft protection addition #2: Identity CheckOur next Android security step-up came into the mix initially last year, for a limited range of devices, and started appearing more broadly across the ecosystem over more recent weeks and months. It’s called Identity Check, and it leans on your device’s biometric security systems — a fancy way of saying the fingerprint sensor and facial recognition abilities — to require an extra slice of authentication before any especially sensitive action can be performed. That means if you try to change something with your Google account, change the device’s PIN, disable a theft protection feature, or mess with other high-level system settings, you’ll first have to prove it’s actually you and not someone else who got their greasy mitts on your gizmo and got past its lock screen. In an extra intelligent twist, you can also specify certain known and trusted places — like your home or other preferred hidey hole — where the extra protection won’t apply, to save you the trouble when you’re sure the phone is safe.Again, this is a “why not?!” level of added protection. But it’s up to you to opt in and activate it.So once more, search your system settings for theft protection, then tap the associated option — and this time, look for “Identity Check” as an option on the screen that follows.Tap it, then follow the steps that show up to both activate the system and — if you’re so inclined — to set up and specify certain trusted places where those extra measures won’t be required.Android’s Identity Check protection offers a nice mix of added security and convenience.JR Raphael, FoundryAnd, once again, if your device doesn’t yet have this option, set yourself a reminder to check back periodically and keep an eye out for its arrival.Android theft protection addition #3: Remote Lock protectionOur final feature is one that’s also in the midst of getting an important update and expansion — and that’s Android’s Remote Lock option. When active, Remote Lock gives you the power to quickly lock your phone from any other device simply by going to android.com/lock and putting in your phone number. You can lock your device in seconds from any web-connected device — once it’s opted into Remote Lock.JR Raphael, FoundryYou can find and activate the option it in that same “Theft protection” Android settings area — and, once you do, be sure to tap its line and scroll down to look for the new added “Security question” addition. The Remote Lock security question is a smart extra step to enable.JR Raphael, FoundryThat’ll let you create your own security question that’s then presented as an extra step at android.com/lock before any remote locking can occur — a smart and worthwhile addition, if you ask me.Now, before we call it a day...2 more recent additions worth checkingIn addition to the recently added and expanded options we just went over, now’s a fine time to revisit the general section of Android theft protection features that were added into the platform relatively recently — because, as I discovered for myself whilst looking into these newer expansions, some of ’em might not necessarily carry over on their own and remain active by default when you move into a new device. That means you won’t have the added measures of protection they offer unless you take the time to swim into your system settings and activate ’em again. So once more search your settings for theft protection — and, on the screen with all the related options:See if “Theft Detection Lock” is enabled. That’ll rely on your device’s sensors to detect the type of motion typically associated with someone snatching your phone and running off with it and then automatically lock the thing down if that ever happens. And double-check the status of “Offline Device Lock.” As its name suggests, that one automatically locks your phone if it goes offline, as another data-protecting safeguard.Remember: Android security shouldn’t be scary. And the more proactive steps you take now, the less you’ll need to worry whenever that next inevitable over-the-top headline arrives.Treat yourself to more non-alarmist Android knowledge with my free Android Intelligence newsletter. You’ll get three new things to try every Friday and an endless array of interesting life upgrades.

使用授权请联系news@chnet.co.nz。chineseherald.co.nz All Rights Reserved

Jack Tame: The Epstein files have been illuminating
I’m generally sceptical of conspiracy theories. Call me old fashioned, but I’m pretty sure we landed on the moon. I think 9/11 was al-Qaeda, not an inside job. I think climate change is real. But I’ve got to admit, I’ve been captivated by the information released in the Epstein files. And while I still don’t think it reveals a coordinated paedophile ring, the trove of information released so far has been far more enlightening than I ever anticipated it would be. Truthfully, I thought it would be a nothing burger. I was wrong. It’s not that the files necessarily prove greater illegality. Many people thought the dump would reveal a client list of the global elite: a black book of politicians, billionaires, CEOs, celebs, and royalty who’d committed the most appalling crimes and would be rounded up and brought to justice. So far at least, it doesn’t have that. But it has illuminated a web of connections and relationships among the wealthy, connected, and powerful that we might never have known existed. And it is quite extraordinary to see the ways in which power and acquaintances have been leveraged. There are several stand out takeaways for me. First of all, the sheer volume of information. Thousands of videos, hundreds of thousands of photos, millions of messages. Was there anything this guy didn’t document? And there are still millions of documents that haven't yet been released. Secondly, the impact the files are having in countries outside the United States. Although they name heaps of big powerful figures in the US, many of whom are closely connected to the President or the Clintons, the blow-back has arguably been curiously stronger in other parts of the World. Overnight, the Crown Princess of Norway has publicly apologised to the King and Queen after her close relationship with Epstein was illuminated. As we go to air, Police in the UK are searching the properties of Peter Mandelson, the man who until a few weeks ago was the UK's Ambassador to the US, and who's one of many people who after initially talking down their relationship with Epstein, has been proven to have been far closer to the man, to have visited him and stayed with him well after this initial convictions. Ariane de Rothschild, the CEO of the Rothschild Swiss bank, previously said she only met Epstein on bank business, but the files suggest a much chummier relationship, Epstein inviting her to stay at his apartment. My third takeaway is that even though nothing illegal is alleged on their behalf, some of the high-profile names associated with Epstein have forever tarnished their reputations through their enduring relationships with him. Bill Gates continuing to communicate with Epstein for years. Noam Chomsky tendering advice to Epstein on surviving a media storm relating to his criminal charges. And of course, the greatest fall from grace outside of Epstein himself, the former Prince Andrew, disgraced, stripped of his titles, and with no realistic path back to respect. The files may not have proved a great conspiracy, but they have been incredibly illuminating. And as I've digested the reporting and analysis, the communications of incredibly powerful people who never imagined their messages would be publicised, I've been reminded of a salient quote. "The measure of a person's character is what they do when no one is watching."

Black Cat cruise capsize: Fuel spills from compromised boat near Akaroa, wildlife team on standby
A wildlife response team is on standby as a compromised boat containing over 2000 litres of marine diesel fuel sits beached at Nīkau Palm Valley Bay near Akaroa, Canterbury.A dolphin sightseeing tour turned sour yesterday when a Black Cat Cruise boat capsized with 38 passengers and three crew members on board.“A light fuel sheen is visible on the water surrounding the vessel,” Environment Canterbury said in a Facebook post update today.“A dedicated wildlife team is on standby, and response options will continue to be closely monitored and assessed throughout the day to minimise any environmental impact.”A Tier 2 incident response was declared yesterday and an exclusion zone is now in place, with all vessels told to stay clear of the area. The vessel has 2240 litres of marine diesel fuel on board and approximately 120 litres of other oils in sealed containers and engines combined, the post said.A Black Cat Cruise boat capsized near Akaroa on Saturday. The Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) have appointed a dedicated investigation team to look into the incident.TAIC chief investigator of accidents Louise Cook said the agency wanted to hear from people who were on the vessel and anyone who saw what happened.“We’re particularly keen to receive videos or photographs,” she said.Coastguard Akaroa volunteers overheard a Pan-Pan call for assistance, arriving 15 minutes later to find other vessels already helping, they told the Herald.“Upon arrival, several vessels were already assisting with the safe evacuation of those on board.“Coastguard volunteers attempted to pump water from the Black Cat, but the rate of water ingress was too great to keep up with.”Pan-Pan is used to indicate that a vessel has a very urgent message to transmit about its safety, such as loss of steering, according to Maritime New Zealand’s radio handbook.Mayday is used when a vessel or person is in grave and imminent danger and requires immediate assistance.Maritime New Zealand did not wish to comment on whether protocol was correctly followed.“We’re still establishing the details of how the incident occurred.”Coastguard's Ihenga Rescue was already out training on the water when they got the call. Photo / Bevan ConleyMaritime New Zealand’s immediate focus was on potential environmental impacts and recovery of the boat.“At this stage, we’re currently working through the incident.”A fishing vessel crew who responded to the distress call said passengers were “pretty frightened” after the boat began taking on water near Akaroa Heads.“Looked like it was on fire or there was oil pouring out of the engine and creating that smoke,” driver Paul Wright said. The vessel looked like it was in “serious trouble” with passengers gathered on the top deck wearing life jackets, and smoke was visible near the front of the boat.Wright’s fishing boat took 15 passengers on board and other nearby boats moved in to assist as well. The Herald approached Black Cat Cruises for comment, however, the company said it was not speaking to media at the moment.Sammy Carter is a journalist for the New Zealand Herald covering news in the Wellington region.
