At least 10 killed in Pakistan mining project attack

Quetta, Pakistan: A group of militants killed at least 10 people at a copper and gold mining project in Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan province, officials said on Thursday, the latest violence in a region facing an armed separatist movement.

About 40 militants on motorcycles and other vehicles stormed the mining project site of Pakistani company National Resources Private Limited (NRL) in the Darigwan area of Chagai district on Wednesday.

"The attack left ten people dead, including seven workers and three security personnel," a local administration official told AFP on condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to speak to the media.

"There are unconfirmed reports that militants also took some employees hostage," he added.

A local police official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the details of the attack to AFP.

The company acknowledged the attack late Wednesday, saying security forces responded "promptly and have secured the area".

No group claimed responsibility, but local ethnic separatist groups have intensified their attacks in the region in recent years, including on mining projects.

Pakistan's poorest province and largest by landmass, Balochistan lags behind the rest of the country in almost every index, including education, employment and economic development.

Baloch separatists accuse Pakistan's government of exploiting the province's natural gas and abundant mineral resources without benefiting the local population.

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), the province's most active armed separatist group, in February launched a string of coordinated attacks across the region that killed more than 190 people.

Separatists have in the past killed workers based on their ethnicity, targeting ethnic Punjabis and Sindhis and accusing them of being outsiders to the province.

In its statement, NRL said that 90 percent of its workforce consisted of local workers.

Vietnam says economy grew 7.83% in first quarter, 'difficulties' ahead

Hanoi, Vietnam: Vietnam recorded economic growth of 7.83 percent in the first quarter of 2026 year-on-year, the statistics office said on Saturday, but faces "numerous difficulties" as the Middle East war hits fuel prices.

First-quarter growth was up from 7.07 percent last year after strong gains in industrial production, construction and services during the Tet festive season.

"Vietnam's socio-economic performance in the first quarter of 2026 recorded positive results amid ongoing global uncertainties and challenges," the General Statistics Office (GSO) said in a statement.

It said the conflict in the Middle East "triggered sharp energy price volatility, disrupted supply chains, and intensified inflationary pressures".

Exports from the Southeast Asian manufacturing hub to the United States jumped 24.2 percent year-on-year to $33.9 billion, the GSO said.

Overall exports rose 19.1 percent to $122.93 billion from the first quarter in 2025, while imports climbed 27.0 percent to $126.57 billion.

China was Vietnam's largest source of imports, the statistics office said.

Vietnam's Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan said "domestic fuel supply is currently sufficient to meet production and consumption needs through the end of April 2026", according to the government's website.

GSO Director Nguyen Thi Huong said Vietnam faced "numerous difficulties and challenges, particularly as the country's highly open economy is exposed to overlapping impacts from global economic headwinds" as it enters the second quarter.

Vietnam hiked fuel prices again this week, bringing the cost of diesel to 44,780 dong ($1.7) per litre -- up more than 140 percent since late February.

The price of regular gasoline was up more than 28 percent to 26,970 dong ($1.02) per litre.

Hanoi has dipped into an emergency fuel price stabilisation fund and scrapped environmental taxes to ease pressure on fuel prices.

Vietnam aims to grow its economy by at least 10 percent this year and is seeking "middle-income country" status by 2030.
