Country: Brazil Source: European Commission's Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations Since 20 April, heavy rainfall has been battering northern Brazil – especially the city of Belém in the state of Pará – as well as the southern state of São Paulo, resulting in displacement and damage. According to the the Pan‐American Health Organisation (PAHO), in Belém, the capital of Pará, a state of emergency has been declared; many homes are flooded and road transport is currently possible only by boat. The PAHO and media further report that the impacts extend beyond the north. In Sorocaba, around 600 families have been affected; in Piedade, about 30 homes have suffered damage; and in Ibiúna, nearly 100 houses were hit, displacing more than 600 people. Fallen trees and power outages have also been reported across the affected areas. Forecasts for the next 48 hours indicate further moderate to locally heavy rain and thunderstorms over northern Brazil (orange alert), including the already‐impacted Belém, while drier conditions are expected in the state of São Paulo.
