Country: Fiji Source: European Commission's Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations Between 6 and 8 April, Tropical Cyclone VAIANU passed close to the western coasts of Fiji, causing displacement of people and damage to property. On 9 April at 00 UTC, its centre was located offshore 900 km south of the southern coasts of Fiji island with maximum sustained winds of 111 km/h (tropical storm) According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), 1 360 people were affected and 1 284 were displaced. They are being accommodated in 46 evacuation centres: seven in the Eastern Division, six in the Central Division, 30 in the Western Division and three in the Northern Division. In addition, five houses have been reported partially damaged by strong winds in the Western Division. VAIANU is moving southward over the Southern Ocean, weakening and is expected to dissipate within the next two days. It could affect northern New Zealand as a low pressure area starting from 12 April. For the next 36 hours, cloudy skies with moderate rain are expected across most of Fiji.
