Rabat moves to protect purchasing power as global energy volatility rises
Rabat moves to protect purchasing power as global energy volatility rises Rachid Lazrak, head of the North Africa Centre for Studies and Research, said the move signals a transition “from reactive management to a logic of vigilance,” aimed at anticipating crises. Wednesday 01/04/2026 Morocco’s Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch. RABAT The Moroccan government has begun activating pre-emptive mechanisms to confront the potential economic fallout of escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, establishing a ministerial committee tasked with monitoring developments and taking necessary measures to protect economic stability and citizens’ purchasing power. Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch chaired the first meeting of the committee, which reviewed various scenarios for how the crisis could affect the domestic economy amid persistent global uncertainty and heightened volatility in international markets, particularly in energy and raw materials. According to a statement from the prime minister’s office, different government sectors presented detailed assessments of the expected repercussions of the crisis, alongside proposals for measures aimed at mitigating its impact, especially in ensuring market supply and maintaining price stability, with a strong focus on protecting household purchasing power. Akhannouch stressed that the government would not approve any increases in the prices of butane gas or electricity, despite record rises on international markets driven by the Iran war. He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to shielding Moroccan households during what he described as a sensitive period, adding that authorities are closely monitoring agricultural product prices and transport costs to prevent disruptions in supply chains. The committee, which includes ministers responsible for interior, economy, trade, energy, agriculture and tourism, will meet regularly or whenever necessary to respond swiftly to changing international conditions. The government is mobilising all available resources to prevent global price fluctuations from impacting the domestic market. Analysts say the creation of the committee reflects a shift towards a more anticipatory governance model. Rachid Lazrak, head of the North Africa Centre for Studies and Research, said the move signals a transition “from reactive management to a logic of vigilance,” aimed at anticipating crises before they translate into internal pressures on prices, supply and transport. He added that the real value of the initiative will depend not on the committee’s establishment, but on its ability to translate political awareness into tangible actions, such as stabilising market supply, controlling transport costs and limiting the transmission of external shocks to consumer prices, while maintaining clear communication to avoid social anxiety and speculation. As part of these efforts, the government has approved exceptional direct support for transport professionals covering the period from March 15 to April 15. The measure, which follows the processing of more than 87,000 applications, aims to offset rising fuel costs and ensure that transport tariffs for both goods and passengers remain unchanged. The support scheme covers a wide range of sectors, including public and rural transport, freight services, tourist transport, taxis and urban buses. Beneficiaries are required to maintain current pricing levels in exchange for compensation provided by the state. Akhannouch noted that international butane gas prices have surged by more than 68 percent since early March, but confirmed that this increase would not be passed on to consumers. Similarly, electricity tariffs will remain unchanged as part of efforts to ease pressure on households and businesses. These measures underline Morocco’s determination to cushion its economy against external shocks, ensuring the continuity of supply and stability of essential services while navigating a volatile global environment.
