Global forecasts indicate strengthening El Niño conditions, prompting WFP to support government-led preparedness, early warning and anticipatory action to protect lives and livelihoods. Without additional funding, refugee and school feeding assistance could be disrupted from September 2026, affecting more than 63,000 refugees and asylum seekers and nearly 594,000 learners. Humanitarian needs are rising as over 38,000 Malawians return from South Africa following attacks on foreign nationals, increasing demand for basic services, food, and protection at reception centres.
