Sigríður Þorvaldsdóttir dies aged 85

Sigríður Þorvaldsdóttir, actor and director, has died at the age of 85. Sigríður was born in Reykjavík, the daughter of Þorvaldur Steingrímsson and Ingibjörg Halldórsdóttir. She graduated from Leiklistarskóli Þjóðleikhússins (the National Theatre Drama School) and qualified as a master hairdresser several years later. She pursued further studies in acting in Hollywood and joined Þjóðleikhúsið (the National Theatre of Iceland) as a permanent member of its company after returning from the United States. For many years, she was one of Iceland's best-loved actors and played major roles on stage and television. Sigríður was married to Lárus Sveinsson and they had three daughters.
