AMDA Emergency Relief #3: Kumamoto Earthquake, Japan - 7 August 2026

AMDA has been continuing its medical relief efforts at an evacuation center established at Yatsushiro Municipal Daiyon Junior High School in Yatsushiro City, one of the most-affected areas in the quake-hit Kumamoto region. The following is the summary of its aid activities from 45 August: ■ 4 August 7 August 2026 On 4 August, AMDA’s relief team began the day by exchanging information with shelter management before conducting its regular medical rounds. the burden on shelter staff. During the rounds, the team examined eight evacuees and also responded to a number of health consultations. The team found that some individuals, including those with high blood pressure, would require continued monitoring in the days ahead. Conditions at the shelter were gradually improving. Trial operation of the water supply had begun, allowing toilets to be flushed during the daytime. As a result, the need to carry water in buckets (a task that had previously been necessary) was reduced, easing However, the water supply was still cut off at night, and such inconveniences were expected to persist for some time. ■ 5 August On 5 August, the AMDA team conducted its morning medical rounds, examining 10 evacuees. As mentioned previously, conditions at the shelter were constantly improving. In addition to installing a portable toilet system (which individually seals waste after each use and is handy when the water supply is cut off), the team provided newly delivered cardboard beds to families with young children. The team also offered a foot bath service for evacuees. For now, AMDA will continue its relief work by carefully paying attention to the needs on the ground.
