Countries: Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine Source: International Rescue Committee Please refer to the attached file. Suggested overview: This manual is a practical and methodological guide for counsellors, trainers, coaches and facilitators who support refugees interested in self-employment, with a focus on Ukrainian refugees. It was developed by International Rescue Committee (IRC) Poland, IRC Germany and partners: Microfinance Center (Poland), Perspektive neuStart (Germany) and European Humanities University (Lithuania) under the OPPORTUNITY project, funded by the European Social Fund+ Social Innovation Initiative, which promotes self-employment pathways for Ukrainian refugees in Poland and Germany. The manual aims to strengthen Business Development Support (BDS) providers and the cooperation among local organisations that serve refugees. The manual combines adult learning principles, trauma-informed and strengths-based approaches, and hands-on business advisory tools. It is organised in 11 sections that follow the entrepreneurial journey: working with refugees (adult learning, coaching and the GROW model, building safe and empowering client relationships); foundations of self-employment; adapting workshop content for migrants; motivation and needs identification, including reaching migrant women and individual development plans; entrepreneurial pathways; economic systems and administration, including business culture differences and e-administration in Poland; recognition of qualifications; digital tools and AI in advisory work; integration with the local ecosystem; psychological first aid, professional boundaries and referral to specialists; and monitoring, evaluation and reflection. Each section is made up of ready-to-use activities with accompanying facilitation sheets, such as question toolkits, scenario cards, checklists and templates. The manual notes that legal, residency and tax information is for general guidance only, and that advisors should refer clients to qualified professionals for binding advice.
