Kanlaon Volcano erupts

MANILA, Philippines – The Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island erupted which lasted for two minutes, a report from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Thursday.Kanlaon, currently under Alert Level 2, which means an increased unrest, continues to spew ash after the “moderate explosive burst” that took place around 4:38 p.m.Residents in Sitio Guintubdan in Barangay Ara-al, La Carlota City in Negros Occidental reported ashfall in the area.A dark gray plume rose 2,000 meters above the crater before drifting southwest, Phivolcs said.Pyroclastic density currents or PDCs descended the southern and southwestern upper slopes within one kilometer of the summit crater as recorded by the Kanlaon Volcano Network, it added.Phivolcs renewed its warning to the public to stay away from its four-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) as hazards due to sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions as well as magmatic activity were possible.
