Madagascar villagers file claim against Rio Tinto over alleged mine contamination

More than 6 500 people in Madagascar have filed a claim in London's High Court against Rio Tinto, alleging contamination from the mining group's mineral sands operation exposed them to dangerous levels of lead and uranium. The claim relates to Rio Tinto's QIT Madagascar Minerals (QMM) mine. Communities near the site have previously protested over water releases from the mine into the surrounding environment, according to law firm Leigh Day, which is representing the claimants.
