Description Sustained and heavy rainfall across Ondo State beginning in early August 2026 has triggered widespread riverine and urban flooding across at least seven Local Government Areas in the state, inundating homes, submerging roads and bridges, destroying property and displacing large numbers of residents. The flooding is ongoing and worsening, with multiple communities in the riverine south of the state particularly severely affected as water levels continue to rise. The situation in Ilaje Local Government Area is the most critical. Igbokoda community in Ilaje LGA, including the Naval Base in Igbokoda and the council headquarters, has been submerged. Displaced residents have been observed sleeping under improvised shelters by the roadside, while others have sought refuge with friends and relatives in other LGAs. The Nigerian Red Cross Society Ondo State Branch has formally recommended to the Ondo State Government that an urgent IDP camp be established in a safe LGA to accommodate the displaced population. In Okitipupa LGA, communities including Ayeka, Ikoya, Igbodigo, Igbotako, Erinje, Kuneyin and Apata have been severely affected, with homes and commercial premises submerged, bridges destroyed and movement restricted. Properties worth millions of naira have been lost. The NRCS Ondo State Branch conducted a rapid assessment of three of the seven affected LGAs; Ondo West, Ilaje and Okitipupa through the branch volunteers. Assessment of the remaining four LGAs (Irele, Ese-odo, Ile-oluji/Okeigbo and Odigbo) is ongoing in coordination with the Ondo State Emergency Management Agency (ODSEMA) and NEMA. From the three assessed LGAs alone, 2,527 households have been confirmed as affected. The true scale of impact across all seven LGAs is significantly higher and will be confirmed upon completion of the full assessment. The Ondo State Government has deployed amphibious machines to clear waterways and drainage channels in Ilaje LGA under the direction of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, targeting the removal of obstructions from canals and river channels to reduce the risk of further flooding. NEMA has also conducted an assessment in the affected LGAs, attributing the severity of the flooding to blocked waterways, indiscriminate refuse disposal and illegal structures erected along river channels. Ondo State is explicitly listed among 21 states identified by the Federal Government on critical flood alert for 2 to 15 August 2026, which covers 944 communities at highest risk nationally.
