Country spotlight: Afghanistan - Beyond the breaking point: The impact of aid cuts on women-led and women’s rights organizations

This report presents findings from 74 women-led and women’s rights organizations based in Afghanistan that participated in the Beyond the Breaking Point global survey on the impacts of sustained reductions in international humanitarian funding. Conducted in April 2026, the survey captures the cumulative effects of funding reductions that began in January 2025. Since August 2021, women and girls in Afghanistan have been progressively excluded from education beyond the sixth grade, most formal employment, public spaces, and leadership and decision-making at every level. Women’s organizations, including aid groups, and the women who work for them already operate in an increasingly restrictive environment. Against this backdrop, drastic cuts to humanitarian funding have had a particularly severe impact.
