Local holiday declared for Swains Island 101st Anniversary

By Samoa News staff reporters@samoanews.com Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The governor has declared a a public holiday, on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, in American Samoa to marks the 101st anniversary of Swains Island. According to the memorandum, signed by Gov. Pulaali’i Nikolau Pula, “on May 13, 1925, the United States flag was raised on Swains Island, marking its inclusion under the authority and protection of the United States and its place within the Territory of American Samoa.” To mark the 101st anniversary of this historic event a public holiday will be observed. All government offices will be closed and normal government operations will be suspended on that day. Employees of the American Samoa Government who are not required to perform essential services shall be excused from duty, and employees required to work will receive holiday wages in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
